Truth and fiction about the “death match” – a football battle of Soviet athletes and fascist anti-aircraft gunners
The Great Patriotic War is remembered by many grandiose battles in which Soviet soldiers defended the independence of their homeland. But in the history of the confrontations between the USSR and Nazi Germany, there is one unique battle that took place not on the battlefield, but on the football field. This is a match between the Ukrainian Start team and the German Flackelf anti-aircraft gunners, later called the “death match”. The event took place in August 1942 in occupied Kiev and, over time, grew into fictions and legends.

Everyone’s life is different, and the 75-year-old Iris Davis considers her life to be quite normal. The fact that she continues to receive bodybuilding awards at her age, and she celebrated her last birthday by pulling herself 21 times on the horizontal bar, she also considers normal. “If I can, then you can,” she says to everyone she helps in the gym.
Iris Davis now lives in Melbourne, Florida. In the 1960s, in this city a woman was still not allowed to go to the gym – this was inappropriate, and sometimes simply forbidden. Now, according to Iris, she herself is the best proof that times have changed – she is a woman, she is 75 years old, and she teaches other people, including male bodybuilders, how to properly perform certain exercises and workouts.
Iris herself was born in the capital of Ireland. She was one of 14 children in the family, so at 16 she moved to London in search of a better life, and she got married the next year. And then in a short period her whole life went awry: her first child died as a baby. Iris was terribly worried about this loss, but almost immediately became pregnant second.
